Dear participants in the 2008 International 8M World Championship Chopard,
Enclosed you will find the first issue of our document “Competitor Info”, which contains important information regarding several practical matters for the championship this summer. Please read carefully and distribute to your yacht’s crew. A more detailed version will be available at a later time, probably in the end of May.
Our Shore Manager, Mr. Erich Kuhle, kindly asks you to answer these questions as soon as you know the answers (I strongly recommend that you read the attached document before answering):
1) Is your yacht arriving at Hankø/Fredrikstad loaded on a trailer
or on its own keel?
2) If your yacht is coming on a trailer: does it have a single centre lifting hook?
3) Is your yacht equipped with an engine?
4) Are you bringing an extra yacht to Hankø to live in during the championship?
The attached document lists several options for mooring of yachts that are not competing in the championship, but we find it easiest to make a coordinated reservation for all the teams. Please provide us with the yacht's length, width, draft, arrival and departure dates.
Mr. Kuhle’s email is erich.kuhle@vikenfiber.no, and his phone number is +47 413 14 492. Mr. Kuhle can be contacted for all questions regarding transportation, launching, hauling, mooring and storage. Be aware that the next issue of the Competitor Info anyway will contain more details on this.
We remind you that there must be a crew present in Fredrikstad when the launching of the yachts take place Wednesday 2nd July or Thursday 3rd July.
Always keep an eye on our website (http://www.kns.no/Engelsk/Race/8mR_World_Championship/) for updates the coming weeks!
The race organizers in KNS wish you a pleasant time preparing for the championship! Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
Best regards,
Ivar Gilså

To all IEMA Officers
and Fleet Captains
06.06.2008 |
It is with sadness that we have to inform you that yesterday, our friend and honoury life member Gaston Schmalz has passed away. For over 50 years he sailed his beloved 8-Metre France from the port of Cannes, usually around 11:00 you could see the graceful blue hull leave the port for a sail round the bay of Cannes. His love for the sport and openness made him introduce more young sailors to the 8-Metre Class then any other man did in Europe. It was Gaston who with his Gaulois initiated a series of 5 modern 8-Metres in 1983 and again, in 2001 at the age of 82, he commissioned another modern 8-Metre, Fleur de Lys, from his good friend Jacques Fauroux. Fleur went on to win the 8-Metre World Cup in 2002 and 2003. Having served as secretary and vice president of IEMA and having shipped his boats to 15 World Championships on both sides of the Atlantic, Gaston was elected honoury life member as well as member of the 8-Metre Hall of Fame.
With Gaston, our class has lost a true gentleman, an outstanding sportsman and a friend who was an example to us all. |

6 metre sailors take to the ice
as a new trophy is born.
15.02.2008 |
 |
| Friday 25 January 2008 6 intrepid English sailors arrived for the inaugural event to race for the ICE CUP a new trophy donated by Johan Larson president of the 6-metre fleet in Sweden. To be raced for annually on the ice in the DN (Detroit News) class.
Eric (an official from the Swedish Ice racing team) was called in to give us a crash course (only Andy Ash-vie from Harken UK took this literally) in how to assemble and sail these incredible boats. Basically a canoe on a plank attached to three skates with a mast and sail. No breaks and able to achieve 130 km/hr with very little wind, (a certain mind set is required).
With one and a half days of practise before racing, the plan is to master these pocket rockets. No component weighing more than 20kg very easy to assemble. Out onto the ice which you can see through you take the tiller in one hand the runner in the other, with spikes on your feet push/sprint behind the boat building up momentum to create apparent wind quickly jump onto the plank/rear axel drop into the boat and sheet on hard. Crash helmet essential as tacking requires taking a blow to the head as the boom crosses over and rests almost on your shoulder. In the mean time you are trying to hold up your head so you can see where you are being propelled at great speed avoiding collisions as the almost arctic sun is shinning directly into your eyes, coupled with watching out for the fissures in the ice that you are meant to cross over and not drive down!
On the Second day of practise I had almost overcome my fears when Andy ‘Crash-Vie’ spun out breaking the plank and snapping a skate from its mounting. As he nursed the yacht back to the shoreline and informed us of the accident and damage I very quickly took the chance to take on duties as race officer and watch heart in mouth as the rest of my intrepid countrymen and women took on the Swedes. Ben Clothier of Battle Cry took off like Karl Lewis winning the trophy with a 1.1.2. Followed very closely by our host Johan Larson 1.1.3. Who would have thought the Brits would win.
Wish you were there, Great time had by all

6mR Fraud Attempt
30.11.2004
Hi All,
There have recently been several fraud attempts in connection with the sale of sixes. All of you are currently listed on the For Sale pages either at www.6mrnorthamerica.com or at the ISMA website, so be warned of this scam. Read below, and if you have received an offer similar to this, contact your local police.
Best Regards,
Matt Cockburn
PSSMA Secretary
To whom it may concern,
As most of the recipients of this mail will know, I have put my 6mR St Francis VI up for sale, on both the "ISMA web site" and the "6mRNA web site". I have had several responses, and is close to finalizing a sale to a serious buyer, but I have also been approached by professional criminals, and the Norwegian Police has urged me to inform both the two actual web sites and other potential sellers about this attempt to prevent others to become victims. There will also be an article on this case in Norwegian Sailing magazines.
In my case my total loss is limited USD 90, but if I had not been sufficiently suspicious, I could have lost USD 17000 ! The following is a short recap:
First I was approached by email from a "Donnel Jones" writing:
Hello Seller, I'm interested in buying the NOR 89 St Francis VI and i want you to write me back with the details and the last offering price.looking forward to your response. Best Regards, Donnel Jones
After a normal exchange of seller / buyer information, (I asked USD $18,000 for her) his next step was:
Hello , Thanks for the mail received,my client is happy to let you know that he is contented with the final asking price. My clients firm will be effecting the payment on behalf of my client and the payment will cover both the cost of the Yacht, shipping of the Yacht and the clearance/miscellaneous expenses on the Yacht delivery. So,the payment will be made out to you in excess, you will send the overpayment to the shipping firm.I will instruct him to make out the Cheque to you.So send payment details, that is:your full name, detailed address ,your contact phone number and cellphone number. The shipping will be handled by our contracted shipper and they will come for the pick up as soon as you have confirmed payment. The shipping firm will sign all documents prior to shipping on my client behalf. get back to me immediately so that we can complete the transaction. Please,i will want honesty, trust and understanding in the course of this transaction. Please, send the requested information as soon as possible. Thanks with regards, Donnel Jones, (NewEra Concepts Ltd)
Then I, believe it or not, received a bank cheque, forwarded by FedEx, from Toronto Dominion Asset Management at the amount of USD 35000 !. The trick was of course to make me forward the exceed amount (USD $17,000) to his "shipper" who of course is himself. The cheque was believed to be OK by my bank, but Toronto Dominion where not willing to cash it, as the cheque was false.
He then tried to make me pay him the following way:
Hello Morten, Thanks for the mail received, just go ahead to any Money Gram outlet nearby your location and send the funds and the funds will be received in any Money Gram location there in Canada.deduct your funds and send the rest to TONY SMITH in Ontario Canada and they will receive the funds and any Money Gram location.the Money Gram will charge you for the transfer which you must deduct the money from the balance with you and send the rest.my client said that the name Dallas is the owner of the Item purchased.provide me with information which you use in sending the funds :
senders name and address and also the reference number and the amount sent so it will enable them to access the funds and contact you immediately for the pick up arrangement.i will look forward to your response.have an excellent day Best Regards, Donnel Jones, (NewEra Concepts Ltd)
As a last attempt to make me pay, he came up with this mail:
Morten i have been waiting to your response as regards this transaction but no response from you.i can see that you are a man of a questionable character and i will contact the appropriate authority to take care of this matter.do not forget that you contact is with me.once again i need an update with the proceedings of this transaction i mean how can you have some ones funds in your care and you refuse to comply.look forward to your response.
Donnel
I will not load you with all details, but if anyone is interested in the complete story, let me know.
Norwegian Police can confirm that this is a fast growing type of internet based crime, mostly run by the same Nigerian criminals who used to send us the tear dripping mails begging for assistance to get loose stuck money. The experience this sort of fraud mainly in connection with sale of classic yachts, classic cars and old music instruments......And of course they only approach deals where a long transport leg, (read: high transportation costs) are involved. And it is very hard to track them down.
I am a bit reluctant to disclose the complete story on the different web sites, as you never know how this group can "strike back", on the other hand, it is very important to give our friends a warning. So may be a general warning at the top of the yachts for sale side could be something like:
"Police has warned us that there can be fraud attempts in connection with sale of second hand yachts, and never enter into any transaction, transfer of cash or shipment, unless you are 100 % confident with the other party."
So: Be careful !
If anyone has comments on this matter, or has knowledge of other attempts, pls. let me know.
best regards,

Safir was designed for Markus Wallenberg in 1930. The boat has had four owners since, all much devoted to it.
This classic yacht is in excellent condition after careful and meticulous renovations. Safir is possibly the 8 Metre closest to its original condition, sailing in the Baltic Sea.

Compared to many other classic 8 metres, this yacht is unique in its design with its combination of a classic racing boat and the best cruising capabilities. The cockpit comfortably seats 6-8 persons.

Safir is built in mahogany and teak. It has 4-6 beds, with a pentry unusually placed at the stem of the yacht. It is one of the most beautiful yachts of classic sort that still outsails most modern sailing boats, in the archipelago of Stockholm, Sweden.

New meter-R class established
01.07.2003
Last year in Germany, the smallest of the meter-R classes was founded. These 1mR-„yachts“ with 1.5m hull lengths and 2m mast height are even smaller than the 2.4 mR-boats that are well known in Scandinavia and from the Paralympics. The boats are operated by remote control. The idea for this type of RC-yachts grew in the middle of the 90th during the development of the 8mR-Yacht „Spazzo“ which was constructed by Juliane Hempel in the frame of her dissertation at the FH-Kiel. That time a negative form was build for the tanktestmodel with standards 1:9. Why not build a mR-yacht of the same size to get over the winter season without sailing?

By now there are five of these boats sailing, four more are under construction. It is interesting to know that the special way of construction is subject to the well known mR-formula, similar to their big sisters. Therefore anyone can admit own characteristics within the formula. Scandlings are regulated from the class. The emphasize lies on the importance of simple materials and low costs to create solid boats.
For a boat (selfbuild) there has to be calculated 100-150 hours of work and costs of approx. ¤ 500,-. A hull of the Hempel-design and the detailed plans of construction can be ordered at the class.

Details (Hempel-design):
LOA: 1.500 mm
Beam: 300 mm
Draught: 700 mm
Dspl.: 11,3 kg
Keel weight: 7 kg
Mast: 1960 mm
Sailarea (100%): 1 m2

The loss of Tamatea
01.07.2003
Tamatea was in storage in a "secure" yard in west Auckland while her owner, Andy Robinson was in Canada, when thieves got on board, attempted to steel some gear, and then set fire to her. Its devastating for Andy, his crew and all of the classic yacht fraternity her in New Zealand.

We are running out of time to do anything about saving Tamatea.
Is there likely to be any interest in saving this unique 8mR?
She is the one and only Arthur Robb designed 8mR
There is a high quality fully rigged model of her as well as a half model
There is the original log of her while owned by the Newcomb family.
We have the skilled shipwrights and marine engineering draftsmen to lead the restoration
But we need the would be owner to pick up this special project and make it happen.
NZ Classic Yachts Ltd has the project management expertise to act as the owners representative, as demonstrated with the successful restorations of Prize, Tawera and now the Lady Gay.

Design: Arthur Robb
Builder: Bill Couldrey, New Zealand
Year: 1937
First name: Tamatea

Mystery fire
21.08.2003
"Mystery" was going into inside storage at LaTrinite three weeks ago. As she would not clear the height, the mast was removed to another building.
In that building boat work was being done. The fire started at 2:00 AM and burned until 9:00 AM. I am told that they can see my mast so possibly it has not totally melted. Even though insurance will cover the loss, this is a logistical problem as I am here and the boat is there. Also, we had considered the possibility of offering her for sale prior to Geneva. Diane has not started helming as yet. "Venture" and Issakareen" are the most competitive in Toronto.

01.07.2003
The Tore Holm 8 Illderim has been launched under the new name Amorevita on Saturday 22 of March 2003 This long awaited moment took place in Universal & Crableck Marina - Southampton. Avia Willment assisted by her daughter Vita Lucia, the boat's name sake, did the honours at the Yacht's blessing.

The event and the following party gathered many guests.
The British Classic Yacht Club members were present using the occasion as a focus for their first annual meeting.
Swedish delegation (Elin Wanselius) supported by the Finish 8s party presented a brass chart divider so that the "Swedish beauty" could always find her way home to the Baltic.
The first day for Amorevita had exceptionally good weather and we hope this was a good omen for her coming racing days.
Welcome home Amorevita!

Johan Anker's last design
11.03.2003
Dear all,
The last design Johan Anker made was an Int. 8-Metre which due to the outbreak of war was never built, until......, last week Absolute Restorations in Lisbon laid the keel to build her for a Japanese client. (See attached image). The design is very beautiful and close to the famous 8-Metre Sira owned by H.M. King Harald of Norway. As usual at Absolute Restorations, she will be highly authentic and traditional. The construction will conform to the old Lloyd's scantling rules.

Planking in Grand Bassam mahogany on steam bent oak frames, the back bone in teak. Wooden spars will be built and fittings will be custom cast at Absolute.

Undoubtedly David Vieira and his yard will make the building of this final design by Johan Anker a tribute to this great naval architect.
Soon this exciting building project will be on the website and updated regularly.
Best regards,
John Lammerts van Bueren
Executive secretary IEMA
