2007 Centenary Regatta
22nd to 27th July 2007
Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes
Celebrate 100 Years of Metre Rule Sailing

After 100 years, this regatta is collecting as many metre boats as can make the trip to Cowes from all over the world for what is expected to be a stunning event. The Sixes will undoubtedly form a core to the fleet, with the event following on directly from the World Championships. It is anticipated that many other metre classes will have attended the British Classic Yacht Club Regatta, also during the previous week, the 8mR will be returning from their Worlds at Largs in Scotland and the 12mR will be off afterwards to their Worlds in the Mediterranean.
The event is being co-ordinated by IMETA (International Metre Classes Association) and details are available from their web site www.imeta.org. It is recommended that you pre-register, since in the event that there are too many entries, priority will be given to those who registered early - this is not a commitment, but an indication of intent. IMETA are co-ordinating entries to all the events in the calendar around this event.
View the information about the World Championships for some of the essential features of organising attendance at this event. It would be appreciated if any owners intending to bring their boat can provide an early indication of which events they wish to attend - this is not an entry, but to help with logistics, ensure adequate support facilities across all the events and so that we can communicate with you. If demand is very high and numbers have to be restricted, priority will go to those who have registered. We are co-ordinating activities along with IMETA and it would be helpful if you could pre-register your interest.
The logistics of getting your boat to Cowes could not be easier - the Solent has one of the most concentrated areas of support organisations for yachting in the world. Local 6mR sailors will be pleased to assist where required.

The logistics of getting your boat to Cowes could not be easier - the Solent has one of the most concentrated areas of support organisations for yachting in the world. Local 6mR sailors will be pleased to assist where required - contact Avia Willment at the Universal Marina.

Moorings
Superb, comprehensive marina facilities provided by Cowes Yacht Haven will be available to owners, crew and media representatives. Cowes Harbourmaster. Captain Stuart McIntosh, will be laying additional moorings in the entrance to the Medina - this is an annual feature to provide sufficient moorings for the 1,200 boats that arrive for Cowes Week. A system will be established for co-ordinating mooring bookings.
Yacht Services
As a major yachting centre, Cowes is home to a large number of chandleries, boat yards, engineers, sailmakers, etc, many of them with a very long history and very experienced with classic boats - they probably built many of them. See the Cowes web site for details.
Launching your Boat
To avoid congestion and additional ferry costs, it is recommended that yachts be launched from the mainland and sailed or towed to Cowes. We have three recommended mainland boatyards who are fully conversant with International Six Metres and can if needed, provide towing facilities. The yards are some five kilometres of sheltered sailing to the Cowes marina complex.
The Elephant Boatyard:
named after the "Elephant", Nelson's flagship at the battle of Copenhagen in 1786 which was built in Bursledon, this yard has been at the head of the Hamble, on the old shipyards of Bursledon for over 50 years and is home to a number of local 6mR boats both for yard services and to compete against the owner. elephant@landsendrd.freeserve.co.uk
Hamble Point Marina:
a major, modern, full-service marina facility at the mouth of the River Hamble, with easy access to the world famous waters of the Solent, a magnet for competitive sailors from around the globe, it's a favourite with racers and cruising yachtsmen alike hamblepoint@mdlmarinas.co.uk
HYS (Port Hamble)
Hamble Yacht Services (HYS) is a well established full service yacht repair and refit facility, with a world wide reputation accrued from providing a professional service for both yachts, cruising and racing and motorboats alike. sales@hambleyachtservices.co.uk
Universal Marina:
also on the Hamble, the yard has a dedicated "Metre Shed" with a team of enthusiasts where there have been many restorations of 6mR and 8mR boats, is home to several boats and a very competitive "home team". jaffa@thewillmentgroup.com
Shipping your Boat
Whereas some boats may wish to sail to Cowes and some will have their own transport, we have made arrangements with ... to provide transport to one of the yards mentioned above. It may be appropriate for your national association to co-ordinate this so that several boats can be economically moved together.
Notice to Mariners
Three Harbour Authorities control the Solent sailing area, each of which may post Local Notices to Mariners concerning navigational issues and activities which impact use of the areas:
Cowes Harbour Commission
Southampton Vessel Traffic Services (VTS)
Queen's Harbour Master Portsmouth
Measurement & Insurance
Boats should provide up-to-date measurement certificates with their registration and it may well be prudent to organise this in good time - arrangements have been made for spot checks prior to and during the event. All new sails will be measured. Measurement in the UK is being co-ordinated - see Noticeboard. Valid insurance certificates should also be supplied with third party coverage up to...
Accomodation
Cowes is host to many sailing events and there is a wide range of accomodation available. However, much of it is booked up early.
House to let for specific regattas
Terminus Road very close to High St, Red Jet & marinas
The house sleeps 8 in 4 double bedrooms.

Cowes as a Place
During the events, there will be an extensive social calendar, some of which we will combine with the British Classc Yacht Club so that we can "party" with crew from other metre classes. In addition, Cowes on-shore facilities offer a variety of services. The Cowes website www.cowes.co.uk is packed with information.

2007 Household Division Regatta
& Squadron Regatta
28th to 29th July 2007
Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes
This weekend has a long tradition - class racing for keeled day-boats, including 6mR, Darings (a 5.5mR class), Solent Sunbeams, Dragons, Etchells and Flying Fifteen.
On Saturday, the Household Division run the regatta, providing an opportunity for this historic section of the British Army to form a race committee and operate the bridge. Traditionally, guardsmen are invited on board the boats - order one from the gatehouse (Tel: ???). This is followed by similar racing on Sunday
Entry is coordinated by each class association - a class co-ordinator will be nominated nearer the time.
Celebration. Solent 2004
back to the top
In 2004 the Sparkman and Stephens offices and association will be holding various extravaganzas afloat and ashore, celebrating the 75th anniversary of its founding. Any and all S&S International Metre Boats that wish to come to join celebrations in the USA honoring Olin Stephens, his brother, and all those involved in S&S are invited to email avia@8mr.org.uk
or visit the S&S website www.sparkmanstephens.com
..............................................................................................
Announcement
Olin will be racing with us all three days in and around Penobscot Bay, Maine. The races are:
Thursday July 31 Castine Classic Yacht Race (Castine to Camden)
Friday August 1 Camden Classic Yacht Race (Camden to Naskeag Harbor)
Saturday August 2 Eggemoggin Reach Regatta
Parties, dinners, etc. start Wednesday evening at Castine Yacht Club.
We are seeking a comfortable and elegant classic yacht or yachts, preferably of S&S design, as a berth for Olin on one or all of the nights. Two years ago Craig Tefft hosted Olin on his splendid, Valencia. Last year, thanks to Matt Murphy and the Philadelphia Marine Museum, Olin was given a berth aboard the differently splendid, Enticer.
Please tell S&S association members who have not yet registered for the races that I have the entry forms. Likewise, anyone who wants to offer a berth to Olin, is asked to please contact me.
Best,
Bob

Quick, unofficial update
to the 2003 North Americans...
Despite poor weather forecasts for the Greater Toronto Area, Lake Ontario offered light yet consistent breezes and flat water on both Saturday and Sunday. Wind strenghts ranged from 5 to 10 knots throughout the weekend.
Three races were held on the first day of competition. Iskareen (CAN 21) earned bullets in the first 2 races. Thisbe (CAN 9) displayed its light air superiority with a horizon job on the rest of the 7 boat fleet winning a first place finish in the 3rd race.
Sunday's races offered a bit of variety with 5 knots of wind in the first race and 8-10 kts in the second. Once again, Iskareen took the gun in the first race to clinch the regatta. Venture II (CAN 29) showed its preference for stronger breeze with a first place finish in the in the second race despite a spirited downwind battle to the finish line with Iskareen.
The podium for the 2003 North Americans
is as follows:
1st place - Iskareen, CAN 21 - R. Reimann
2nd place - Venture II, CAN 29 - L. Corely
3rd place - Thisbe, CAN 9 - R. Mitchele & Sons
A final note
in addition to the fine racing, the Lake Ontario fleet had
an additional reason to celebrate. Bangalore (CAN 6) owned by the team of R. Roy, B. Meuring, and G. Jones celebrated its 75th birthday. Birthday cake and champaigne were enjoyed by all.
